Qualifications.

Qualifications were acquired during more than 50 years of electric utility research and industrial experience in increasingly responsible positions. These dealt with the operation of a standards laboratory for electrical quantities, conducting research and measurements on the electric power system and equipment installed on the system, and integrating the requirements of Canadian and international customers in the electric power industry with available technologies to provide instrumentation solutions through:

Selected Achievements.

  • Conceptualised and supervised the development of insulation test equipment operating on a modulated power-line, ie. two-frequency, excitation test signal.
  • Conceptualised and supervised the design and development of a in-service current transformer accuracy testing device.
  • Conceptualised and supervised the development of a portable transformer test equipment operating on direct current.
  • Identified the need for and invented a test instrument for assessing electrical insulation of high voltage equipment.
  • Invented a unique ground-fault detection and location system for use on station or emergency battery systems.
  • Conceptualised, assembled, tested and used a system for determining the efficiency of high current, poly-phase, coaxial transmission circuits.
  • Conceptualised and developed a unique system for measuring the accuracy of instrument transformers.
  • Conceptualised, designed and specified systems for accurately measuring the power in low power factor, high-voltage and high-current circuits.
  • Moulded, coached, lead and motivated people to work as a team.

A. STANDARDS LABORATORY & PRACTICES.
Knowledgeable and experienced in the set-up and operation of laboratory for the maintenance of electrical standards, including: - voltage, resistance, current, power, energy, CT ratio, VT ratio and temperature.

B. TRANSFORMERS.
1. Power Transformers – knowledgeable and experienced in performance testing for - ratio, winding resistance, insulation power factor, impedance, losses – copper, core.
2. Current Transformers – knowledgeable and experienced in the design for – relaying and metering applications, and testing for - ratio, metering accuracy, relaying and transient performance.
3. Voltage Transformers – knowledgeable and experienced in testing for - ratio, metering accuracy and transient performance.
4. Neutralising Transformers - knowledgeable in design for – ground-rise voltage and transient performance.

C. INSULATION POWER FACTOR TESTING.
Knowledgeable and experienced in testing electrical insulation and analysing test results of all types of electric power system equipment, including – transformers, bushings, bulk oil circuit breakers, air blast & SF6 circuit breakers, current transformers (free standing), CVTs, cables, motors, generators, insulating oils, solid insulating materials.

D. INSTRUMENTATION DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT.
Knowledgeable in the needs for test equipment by the electric power system and experienced in the design and manufacture of manual and automatic instrumentation for testing of insulation, resistance, voltage, current, ratio and magnetic characteristics of power system components..

E. BATTERY & BATTERY SYSTEMS.
Knowledgeable and experienced with the problems of grounds on ungrounded battery system, their detection and location.

F. GENERAL TESTING OF POWER SYSTEM COMPONENTS.
Knowledgeable and experienced in testing and analysing test results for the full range of power system equipment. This experience includes partial discharge on generators/motors, efficiency of motors & generators, insulator losses, bus and isolated bus losses,

G. THERMODYNAMICS.
Knowledgeable and experienced in efficiency testing of high-head pumps and turbines.
